So there I was, skimming through my 1000+ unread feeds on Google Reader, feeling rather uninspired (and annoyed at my current internet situation, as it is being rather finicky about which images it wants to load and which it wants to just think about) when I came across this and stopped in my tracks.

I recently realized that I love giraffes

It started out slow, but soon I could no longer ignore the fact that I am suddenly magnetically drawn to anything giraffe related in a five mile radius. They are silly and adorable and I love them.

On my book shelf

This should really become a regular feature if I can stick to it. The mister and I have a respectable collection of books, and while it may be a curse when moving time comes it's quite a blessing for the remainder of our lives. I love books. I love reading them and I love having them. Sometimes I like to scan through the shelves and just remind myself what's there. Some of them take me back to a different place and time (a book of Hans Christian Andersen fairy tales still smells the same as I remember when I was a kid, and there's just some sense of comfort in that fact.) and many others remind me that I haven't even read them yet! 

In any case, the mister gave me some great new books for my birthday and it made me excited to share. 

I had seen this book before (it was sold at Urban Outfitters, after all), and heard lovely things of the blog, but I somehow never picked it up and looked at it. I'm not really sure why. But when it found its way into my hands last night and I started flipping through its pages I found myself enamored. It all started with Karl Lagerfeld's studio.

I don't know why, but I especially love it when people make the decision to stack books flat instead of just lining them up on the shelves.

You couldn't pick a better book for me. I love cupcakes. I love Martha (I wrote a 20 page paper about Martha Stewart in college). If I didn't already have a delicious birthday cake sitting in the kitchen I would be baking a batch of snickerdoodle cupcakes right now.

And a new knitting book. I should really knit more. It doesn't really save you any money knitting your own sweaters (in case you were wondering) but it is kind of fun seeing the baffled expression on people's faces when you tell them you made it.

Happy birthday to me, happy birthday to me!

I got a card from my coworkers and a birthday fruitcake (who does that? anyway...), some great new books and an adorable sweater dress from the hubby-to-be, delicious shrimp pasta dinner and tasty cake, and an impressive amount of birthday well wishes from Facebook friends (yay!). All in all, I would say it's a success. But, I'm not getting any younger here. Not sure what to think about that. But it will never stop me from being excited about birthdays!

(Speaking of, I have a belated post I'm about to write. Don't be alarmed.)

Oh my

Apparently I haven't been on the computer in 3 days and I hadn't even noticed. Sorry I have been so neglectful and missed so many posts! But it's a good thing I make the rules around here so I'm going to go ahead and insert some missing posts because, well, I can.

I'm getting pretty excited for Halloween. I only have a few decorations but I'm ready to put them up. And I'm so looking forward to pumpkin picking, corn mazes, haunted houses, and whatever else comes up this weekend. Fun fun. And photos. Woohoo!

Happy Birthday John Lennon!

I can't conceive of a life without The Beatles. It's pretty much a prerequisite for being part of my family, and I can't quite respect a person who doesn't appreciate them. (It must be noted, perhaps, that the mister is more of an Elvis fan, but he knows better than to ever say anything negative about The Beatles. I tried to extend that rule to Madonna too, but he has his limits and I choose not to push them.) But anyway, Lennon was a creative genius and he was taken way too soon. He would have been 70 on October 9, 2010. I'm also fairly certain this isn't news to any of you, but what the hey, I thought it was notable.

I used to consider myself a bit of an artist

I had completely forgot about these large scale contrast paintings (I'm not really sure what to call them, but this description seemed to fit) that were one of my favorite art projects in high school. I know I have one of Michael Stipe, Kurt Cobain, and Bjork (sense a theme, perhaps?) and now all I want to do is whip out a paint brush and create one right this second!

They are so easy to do and you can get step by step directions over at Poppytalk if you've never done it before. So go on, create! (Anyone? I'd love to see!)

This also gives me a bit of an idea... taking inspiration from one of my sisters who has been brave enough to share journal entries she wrote in middle and high school, perhaps I can share with you some things that I created long long ago. Things that I hold very dear to me and which created the foundation for the crafty lifestyle I (try to) live on a regular basis. Stay tuned (and encourage, if you are interested, so that I don't forget about it!)

I have a great big Helvetica calendar that has never found a home on my walls and is only useful for a couple more months. I love it and it makes me sad that I have neglected it. So I'm thinking about amazing 2011 calendars that will most likely receive the same treatment.

So far this is my favorite.
