the view from my window

You guys, I haven't seen the sun in days. I'm beginning to forget what it looks like. I mean, I know we needed rain and all but four days straight? Enough already.

light up my life

These fabulous lamps are from Atelier Abigail Ahern. In the "About" section on the site, she offers this quote from Alice In Wonderland.
If I had a world of my own, everything would be nonsense. Nothing would be what it is, because everything would be what it isn't. And contrary wise, what is, it wouldn't be. And what it wouldn't be, it would.

the dailies

I don't use planners, never have. One of my college professors, on the first day of class, asked "who uses a planner? Better yet, who doesn't use a planner?" and I was the only person to raise my hand. "Well let's see what grade you get in this class." Oh, is that a challenge, lady? Because I am up for the task. (I got an A, by the way) I have tried to use planners, but there has always been something about the design or organization or the basic fact that I actually have to write in the thing and then go back and read it, and it has just never worked out.

And I have never wished so much that I was a planner using type person than right now. Because of this.

totally seasonally inappropriate

I watched Marie Antoinette recently (not for the first time, but it finally occurred to me to Netflix it. I love this movie.) and it had me scouring my favorite photo sharing sites for frothy, frilly, pastel loveliness that reminded me of the film.

Now I know there are a lot of people out there who hate the movie. They want to complain about the fact that Sofia Coppola used modern music instead of period music, that even after so much obvious attention to detail with set design and costumes she just had to throw a pair of baby blue Converse into a shot, and that the movie itself lacks substance. But I have to disagree on all accounts. Yes, it is visually stunning. Every shot is beautifully styled and the cinematography is to die for. That, combined with the music which I find to be spot on with regards to creating a mood and telling a story, almost make dialog unnecessary (which is good, because as the mister points out there isn't much of it). But much like a silent film I get everything I need from the story without words. And like all of her films, there is such an intense emotion that is not often found in movies.

But enough gushing, here's some more pretty.

Fall, are you coming?

I have to wonder, with 90 degree temps every day, if Fall will actually arrive. But here is a short list of things I am looking forward to this Fall, with images borrowed from around the web.

1) VA State Fair. I have an unexpected day off this weekend and am super excited to get down there for fun, food, rides, animals, tractors, and more! (Mostly I just want to take some photos)
The Zipper
tractors VA State Fair
Sleepy Calf at the State Fair

 3) fall scarves

4) my birthday!

5) pumpkin carving

6) fall leaves (and leaves falling)

7) gingerbread lattes

8) haunted houses, corn mazes, pumpkin picking, hay rides (the always talked about but ever elusive halloween activities)

9)

10) soup

I think I need this

In discussions of DIY wedding invites (is it getting annoying that I randomly mention the wedding? It just comes up. But tell me.) the mister and I have on occasion toyed with the idea of getting some sort of paper cutting device. But they tend to be expensive, and most require you to buy cartridges for everything which makes it even more expensive. And you just can't do whatever you want.

Enter the Silhouette cutting machine. This guy hooks up to your computer, so you can automatically use any font you have on your computer. It cuts paper. It cuts vinyl. You can put pens in it to draw instead of cut. If you feel so inclined you can also do heat transfer material or even temporary tattoos. I don't know why you would want to do that, but if you do then feel free to explain it to me.

And head over to Twig & Thistle to enter to win your very own Silhouette cutting machine. Just know that I will be borrowing it. Just sayin'.

feelings

This doesn't really describe my day today despite spending about 4 hours driving today (to work, to DC for work, home from work, all complete with traffic) but I wanted to post anyway. Because, well, I'm tired and don't feel like coming up with anything else to post right now and I'm ready to get off the computer for the night.

So what would you like to turn bad feelings into? Puppies? Well that's obvious, but there's the same problems as above. Cupcakes? Then I would eat them all and get fat and have more bad feelings. Flowers? Books? All good things... but this is getting ridiculous.

remember those 4 simple goals?

Yeah, I'm working on it. Doing housework when it's needed instead of letting it pile up. Trying to be the type of person who goes out and does things in lieu of hanging out on the couch. Create things? Yeah. Well at least it'll be fall soon and I can convince myself I need some new scarves. But. But. I have been taking some photos.

Around town on my lunch break (it does feel pretty fabulous to have access to all this on my lunch break, and kind of refreshing at the end of the day compared to the dreaded mall.)

From the H Street Festival last weekend (part of the going out and doing things idea. Yay us!) I would have taken more photos but Hipstamatic was being a jerk.

charmed, I'm sure

I am generally not at all a fan of music on websites. It's cheap, it's tacky, it's usually terrible music, and it immediately conjures up images of old Myspace profiles. It's the reason I keep my laptop on mute basically all the time.

But then I visited Clara French's site and I have never been so pleased that my sound was on and I was hearing unsolicited music. It was magical. It's a shame they don't have more photos in the slideshow because I could watch it for hours. Pretty cake stands and the Amelie soundtrack, like it was created just for me. Love. So go on, click the link.

Too many cake posts lately? Nah, I don't think so!

The Knitted Mile

This project from Robyn Love involved 90 knitters from across North America, and lots and lots of yarn donated by Lion Brand Yarn. After being laid out on the streets, the piece was installed in the gallery Grey Matter along with photos of the contributing knitters. This all happened back in 2008, so why is this the first I am hearing of it? Apparently she also has something big planned for the NYC Maker Fair next weekend, so stay tuned for that!

Sweet

A little cake inspiration for you. I personally don't need much of a reason to bake a cake, but just in case you do... I hear someone's birthday is coming up in a month or so and she might die of joy to see one of these beauties with some sparkling candles on top. No, I'm not too old for that.

I need new glasses

Not only are these glasses from Warby Parker super cute, in awesome colors, and affordable to boot... but they also give one pair of glasses to someone in need for every pair they sell. Like Tom's for your face. The website is clean and easy to navigate, and you can even shop by color! (And any place that gives me four different choices for purple glasses, well, I'm sold.) But with so many that I love and no way to try them on... that's where the dilemma lies. Le sigh.

toasty

Loving this perfectly styled shot of kitchen goodies, and obsessed with the adorable hand knit tea cozy and egg cozies. From UK based Toast. This kitchen, flannel pjs, a fireplace in a cabin, a book, a cup of hot chocolate, a dog to cuddle up with... now that's the life I'm dreaming of.

swinging brides, no not that kind

I love this photo and this is what I want my wedding day to feel like.

This house... holy crap

The barely grey walls with white trim, glossy white painted hard wood floors, fireplaces everywhere... I just can't go on. If I knew where this was, I would probably show up at their door and try to move in. I love it.

pure magic

These photos from Rune Guneriussen are what dreams are made of. Stunning.
